What's involved
Since November 2023 a medical report is required for all firearm and shotgun applications. The doctor must receive your full medical record directly from your GP practice, then carries out a face-to-face assessment of your physical and mental health, any history that affects safe handling of a firearm, and any concerns in your records, before completing the report for the police licensing unit.
Good to know
Because your records must come directly from your GP practice, this one takes longer to arrange, usually two to four weeks for records to arrive. Give us your GP surgery details when you enquire and we will start the records request straight away. The doctor has a legal duty to inform the police if a genuine safety concern arises.

Pricing
£180 for the assessment, which includes requesting and reviewing your GP records and completing the police licensing report. Because your records must come from your GP practice, allow two to four weeks before the appointment. You pay after your consultation in person; video and phone consultations are paid at booking.
