The treatments

For men

  • Finasteride 1mg daily. The most evidence-based treatment for male pattern hair loss. Slows or stops hair loss in around 90% of men, regrows some hair in 60% over 12 months.

  • Dutasteride 0.5mg daily. A more potent alternative to finasteride, off-label for hair loss but well-evidenced.

  • Topical minoxidil 5%. A topical solution applied twice daily. Slower than oral but no systemic exposure.

  • Combination therapy. Oral finasteride or dutasteride plus topical minoxidil, the most effective combination by the evidence.

For women

  • Topical minoxidil 2% or 5%. First-line for female pattern hair loss. Twice-daily application.

  • Spironolactone. An anti-androgen prescribed off-label for female pattern hair loss in selected cases.

  • Oral finasteride (where appropriate). Off-label for women, prescribed in selected cases (post-menopausal women, women not planning pregnancy, with appropriate counselling).

We do not prescribe finasteride or dutasteride to pregnant or breastfeeding women, or to women planning pregnancy in the next 12 months, due to the teratogenic risk.

We do not perform hair transplants. For surgical hair restoration, we refer to specialist clinics.
