A pre-employment health assessment for a new role, completed by a registered GP and reported in the way your employer needs.
Employment medicals
The doctor carries out a general examination covering your heart, chest and musculoskeletal system, checks your blood pressure, vision and hearing, and does a urine dipstick. Where your role calls for it, the doctor adds role-specific checks such as lung function for dusty or chemical environments, or a manual handling assessment. Drug and alcohol screening is done only if your employer requests it and you agree.
Under the law, health questions come after a job offer, and under the Access to Medical Reports Act you have the right to see the report before it goes to your employer. The report says whether you are fit for the role, fit with adjustments, or not, and does not disclose specific diagnoses without your consent.
