Acetazolamide is the medicine UK travel medicine recommends for helping to prevent acute mountain sickness. It makes the blood slightly more acidic, which drives you to breathe a little deeper and speeds up the body's own adjustment to thin air. It does not replace going up slowly, and nothing does.
