Equasym XL uses a different release technology to Concerta XL, with a 30:70 immediate-to-extended release split. This means a slightly larger proportion releases immediately (giving a stronger morning boost) with extended coverage lasting about 8 hours. The capsule design means it can be opened and sprinkled on soft food - a significant advantage for children who can’t swallow capsules.

Have you been assessed for ADHD?
A full diagnostic assessment, in person at Westfield or by video, with your diagnosis and a written report. This is the one to choose if nobody has assessed you yet.
Already diagnosed and settled on treatment somewhere else. We confirm your diagnosis and your current dose, then continue your care, rather than assessing you all over again.
Your ADHD review with a GP: monthly while your dose settles, then every 3 or 6 months once you are settled. How you are getting on, any change of dose, and your medication. Only for patients we have already assessed or taken over.
For patients we have marked as settled, between your 3 or 6 monthly reviews. A few questions, read by a GP, before each month's medication. No fee: you pay only for the medication, and only once a GP has approved it.

What you need to know
ADHD in children (6+) and young people. Particularly useful when morning symptom control is a priority (getting ready for school, morning lessons) and coverage through the school day is needed but all-evening coverage is not.
Same methylphenidate mechanism. The capsule contains two types of beads: 30% are immediate-release (dissolve quickly) and 70% are enteric-coated delayed-release beads (dissolve in the intestine). This produces a sharper initial peak than Concerta XL, with a second wave of release around 3-4 hours later. Total coverage approximately 8 hours.
Children and young people who need good morning coverage and school-day symptom control. The sprinkle option makes it suitable for children who cannot swallow capsules - open the capsule and sprinkle the beads onto a spoonful of soft food (apple sauce, yoghurt). The beads must not be chewed. Shorter duration than Concerta XL, which can be an advantage: medication wears off earlier, preserving evening appetite and sleep.
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door. Controlled drugs require additional clinical checks. We may need to contact you or your GP before dispensing.

Very common: decreased appetite, insomnia, headache, dry mouth, nausea. Common: palpitations, tachycardia, weight loss, abdominal pain, mood changes (anxiety, irritability), tremor. Uncommon: psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, paranoia). Monitor: growth (in children), cardiovascular parameters, psychiatric symptoms.
Do not use in severe cardiovascular disease, uncontrolled hypertension, hyperthyroidism, phaeochromocytoma, during or within 14 days of MAOIs. Use with caution in anxiety, psychosis, tics, seizure disorders, substance misuse history.
MAOIs: contraindicated (hypertensive crisis). Antihypertensives: stimulants may reduce their effect. SSRIs: caution with serotonergic effects. Alcohol: avoid.
Limited data in pregnancy. Stimulants may affect fetal growth. Use only if benefit clearly outweighs risk. Discuss with specialist before conception. Not recommended during breastfeeding.
Take once daily in the morning, before breakfast. Can be swallowed whole or opened and sprinkled on soft food (do NOT chew the beads). Coverage approximately 8 hours - shorter than Concerta XL. May need an IR top-up for afternoon/evening if needed. Subject to supply disruptions - LoveMyLife proactively manages stock and will advise on alternatives if supply is affected.

Driving & machinery
May affect ability to drive. Dizziness, drowsiness, and visual disturbances have been reported. Do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
Age restriction
Methylphenidate/lisdexamfetamine: children 6 and over, and adults. Atomoxetine: children 6 and over, and adults. Guanfacine: children 6-17 (MR formulation). All must be initiated by a specialist in ADHD.
Storage
Store below 25°C in a dry place. Keep out of reach and sight of children. Do not use after the expiry date.
