Amlodipine

High blood pressure and angina (chest pain). Often prescribed alongside other blood pressure medications for better control.

Amlodipine is a calcium channel blocker. It stops calcium from entering the muscle cells in your blood vessel walls, causing them to relax and widen. Blood flows more easily, blood pressure drops, and angina symptoms ease.

Adults with hypertension or angina. Suitable for a wide range of patients, including those with diabetes and kidney disease. Not suitable for people with severe aortic stenosis or unstable angina.

Common: flushing, headache, ankle oedema (swelling), dizziness, palpitations. Uncommon: gastrointestinal disturbances, fatigue, rash. Rare: gum hyperplasia (overgrowth) with long-term use.

Do not use in severe aortic stenosis, unstable angina, significant cardiac outflow obstruction. Diltiazem/verapamil: avoid in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction, severe bradycardia, or 2nd/3rd degree heart block.

Grapefruit juice increases blood levels of many calcium channel blockers - avoid. Diltiazem/verapamil: risk of severe bradycardia with beta-blockers. Simvastatin: dose should be limited with diltiazem/verapamil.

Amlodipine and nifedipine: use only if benefit outweighs risk. Nifedipine is sometimes used for hypertension in pregnancy under specialist care. Present in breast milk - use with caution.

Take once daily at the same time. Swollen ankles are the most common side effect -- usually mild but tell your doctor if bothersome. Headaches, flushing and dizziness can also occur, especially initially.
