What you need to know
High blood pressure, angina (chest pain from reduced blood flow to the heart), and irregular heart rhythms.
Atenolol slows the heart rate and reduces the force with which the heart pumps. This lowers blood pressure and reduces the heart's oxygen demand, easing angina symptoms.
Adults with hypertension, angina or arrhythmias. Not suitable for people with severe asthma, heart block, or very low heart rate.
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door.

Atenolol from £20.99 per pack.
Common: fatigue, cold hands and feet, dizziness, bradycardia (slow heart rate), nausea, diarrhoea. Uncommon: sleep disturbances, nightmares (especially propranolol). Rare: bronchospasm, worsening of psoriasis, sexual dysfunction.
Do not use in uncontrolled heart failure, severe bradycardia, sick sinus syndrome, 2nd/3rd degree heart block, severe hypotension, untreated phaeochromocytoma. Use with extreme caution in asthma (beta-blockers can trigger bronchospasm).
Risk of severe bradycardia or heart block with verapamil or diltiazem. Insulin and oral hypoglycaemics: may mask symptoms of hypoglycaemia. Clonidine: do not stop beta-blocker suddenly if also taking clonidine.
Use only if the benefit outweighs the risk. May cause low blood sugar, low heart rate, and low blood pressure in the newborn. Labetalol is generally preferred for hypertension in pregnancy. Present in breast milk - monitor infant for bradycardia.
Take once daily. Can cause cold extremities, tiredness and sleep disturbance. Don't stop suddenly. May mask hypoglycaemia symptoms in diabetics.
