High cholesterol (hyperlipidaemia) and prevention of cardiovascular events such as heart attack and stroke. Also prescribed for people at elevated cardiovascular risk, even if cholesterol levels aren't dramatically high.

Atorvastatin slows down cholesterol production in your liver by blocking an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase. This lowers the amount of LDL ('bad') cholesterol circulating in your blood, and slightly raises HDL ('good') cholesterol. The result is cleaner arteries and a healthier heart.

Adults with high cholesterol or those at increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Your doctor will assess your risk using factors like age, blood pressure, smoking status and family history. Not suitable during pregnancy or breastfeeding.

Common: headache, muscle pain, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation). Uncommon: dizziness, insomnia, rash. Rare but serious: rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown) - seek immediate medical attention if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or malaise.

Do not take if you have active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of liver enzymes. Do not take if pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy. Not suitable for patients with a history of rhabdomyolysis.

Increased risk of muscle problems with: fibrates (gemfibrozil), ciclosporin, erythromycin/clarithromycin, azole antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors. Grapefruit juice can increase atorvastatin/simvastatin levels - avoid large quantities. Warfarin: may increase anticoagulant effect.

Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Statins may cause harm to the developing baby. Stop treatment at least 3 months before planned conception. Use effective contraception during treatment.

Take once daily, usually in the evening. Common side effects include muscle aches, headache and digestive upset. Tell your doctor if you experience unexplained muscle pain or weakness. Avoid grapefruit juice in large quantities. Regular blood tests will monitor your liver function and cholesterol levels.
