Blocks angiotensin II receptors, preventing blood vessel constriction. This lowers blood pressure smoothly and consistently throughout the day.

Adults with hypertension or heart failure who need an ARB, either as a first choice or because ACE inhibitors caused side effects. Not suitable in pregnancy or severe liver disease.

Common: dizziness, headache, fatigue, hyperkalaemia (high potassium). Uncommon: gastrointestinal disturbances, muscle cramps, rash. Rare: impaired liver function.

Do not use in pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimester). Avoid in severe hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction. Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or moderate-to-severe renal impairment.

Risk of high potassium with potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements. NSAIDs may reduce effectiveness and increase renal risk. Lithium levels may increase.

Contraindicated in pregnancy - can cause serious harm to the developing baby including kidney damage and low blood pressure. Stop immediately if pregnancy confirmed. Avoid during breastfeeding.

Take once daily. Can cause dizziness, especially initially. Blood tests for kidney function and potassium needed after starting and periodically.
