In brief…
Indapamide is a thiazide-like diuretic that's become increasingly popular for blood pressure management. It works in a similar way to bendroflumethiazide but with a smoother action and less impact on blood sugar and uric acid. A modern take on a classic approach.

What you need to know
High blood pressure. Increasingly preferred over older thiazides by many guidelines.
Indapamide acts on the kidneys to increase sodium and water excretion, and also directly relaxes blood vessel walls. The combination gives effective, steady blood pressure reduction with fewer metabolic side effects than older diuretics.
Adults with hypertension. A good choice for patients where metabolic side effects are a concern (e.g. those with diabetes or gout risk).
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door.

Indapamide from £20.99 per pack.
Common: increased urination, dizziness, electrolyte disturbances (low sodium, potassium), muscle cramps, thirst. Uncommon: gout, raised blood glucose, rash. Spironolactone specifically: breast tenderness/gynaecomastia, menstrual irregularities.
Do not use in severe renal failure (except furosemide in some cases), Addison's disease (spironolactone), severe hyponatraemia or hypokalaemia, hepatic coma/precoma.
NSAIDs can reduce diuretic effect and increase renal risk. Risk of dangerously low potassium with other potassium-depleting drugs (except spironolactone which is potassium-sparing). Lithium levels may increase. ACE inhibitors: risk of first-dose hypotension.
Diuretics should generally be avoided in pregnancy - they reduce placental perfusion. Spironolactone is specifically contraindicated (anti-androgenic effects). Use only under specialist supervision if essential.
Take once daily in the morning. Generally well-tolerated. Blood tests for kidney function and electrolytes needed periodically. Less likely to worsen gout or blood sugar than older thiazides.
