High blood pressure, diabetic kidney disease, and heart failure when ACE inhibitors aren't tolerated.

Losartan blocks angiotensin II receptors on blood vessel walls. This prevents the blood vessels from tightening, so they stay relaxed and wide. Blood pressure falls and the heart and kidneys are protected.

Adults with high blood pressure, particularly those who developed a cough on an ACE inhibitor. Also used in diabetic nephropathy. Not suitable in pregnancy.

Common: dizziness, headache, fatigue, hyperkalaemia (high potassium). Uncommon: gastrointestinal disturbances, muscle cramps, rash. Rare: impaired liver function.

Do not use in pregnancy (especially 2nd and 3rd trimester). Avoid in severe hepatic impairment or biliary obstruction. Do not use with aliskiren in patients with diabetes or moderate-to-severe renal impairment.

Risk of high potassium with potassium-sparing diuretics or supplements. NSAIDs may reduce effectiveness and increase renal risk. Lithium levels may increase.

Contraindicated in pregnancy - can cause serious harm to the developing baby including kidney damage and low blood pressure. Stop immediately if pregnancy confirmed. Avoid during breastfeeding.

Take once daily. Generally well-tolerated. Dizziness and hyperkalaemia (high potassium) are possible. Kidney function and potassium blood tests are needed after starting.
