High cholesterol, particularly when other statins haven't achieved target levels. Also used for cardiovascular disease prevention.

Rosuvastatin is a more potent inhibitor of the HMG-CoA reductase enzyme than other statins. This means lower doses deliver greater cholesterol reduction. It can be taken at any time of day.

Adults who need a stronger statin, or who haven't reached their cholesterol targets on atorvastatin or simvastatin. Not suitable in pregnancy, active liver disease, or severe kidney impairment.

Common: headache, muscle pain, gastrointestinal disturbances (nausea, diarrhoea, constipation). Uncommon: dizziness, insomnia, rash. Rare but serious: rhabdomyolysis (severe muscle breakdown) - seek immediate medical attention if you experience unexplained muscle pain, tenderness or weakness, especially with fever or malaise.

Do not take if you have active liver disease or unexplained persistent elevations of liver enzymes. Do not take if pregnant, breastfeeding, or planning pregnancy. Not suitable for patients with a history of rhabdomyolysis.

Increased risk of muscle problems with: fibrates (gemfibrozil), ciclosporin, erythromycin/clarithromycin, azole antifungals, HIV protease inhibitors. Grapefruit juice can increase atorvastatin/simvastatin levels - avoid large quantities. Warfarin: may increase anticoagulant effect.

Contraindicated in pregnancy and breastfeeding. Statins may cause harm to the developing baby. Stop treatment at least 3 months before planned conception. Use effective contraception during treatment.

Can be taken at any time of day, with or without food. Same monitoring as other statins -- regular blood tests for liver function and cholesterol. Report unexplained muscle pain.
