This pill contains ethinylestradiol (a synthetic oestrogen) and norgestimate (a third-generation progestogen). It prevents pregnancy by stopping ovulation, thickening cervical mucus, and thinning the womb lining. Norgestimate has low androgenic activity, making it a good choice for women with acne or oily skin.

Women under 35 who don't smoke, with no history of blood clots, stroke, heart disease, breast cancer, or migraine with aura. BMI under 35. Blood pressure must be normal. The 35mcg oestrogen dose means this pill may be less suitable for women who want the lowest possible oestrogen exposure.

Common: breast tenderness, headache, nausea, mood changes, irregular bleeding. Uncommon: bloating, weight changes. Rare but serious: venous thromboembolism (DVT/PE). Norgestimate has a VTE risk profile similar to levonorgestrel-containing pills. The slightly higher oestrogen dose may increase fluid retention compared to 30mcg pills.

History of VTE (deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism), stroke, heart attack, or known clotting disorders. Migraine with aura. Current or recent breast cancer. Active liver disease or liver tumours. Undiagnosed vaginal bleeding. Blood pressure consistently above 140/90.

Enzyme-inducing drugs reduce effectiveness: rifampicin, carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, primidone, topiramate, oxcarbazepine, some HIV antiretrovirals. St John's Wort reduces effectiveness - use alternative contraception. Lamotrigine levels may be reduced. Always tell us about all medications you take.

Do not take if pregnant or breastfeeding. The combined pill is not recommended during breastfeeding as oestrogen can reduce milk supply. If you think you may be pregnant, stop taking the pill and contact us.

Take one tablet daily at the same time. 21 days on, 7 days off (or continuous use as directed). Effectiveness drops with missed pills, vomiting, or diarrhoea. Does not protect against STIs. See a doctor urgently for calf pain, chest pain, sudden severe headache, or visual disturbance.
