Femoston

Relief of menopausal symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, mood changes, and vaginal dryness. Sequential versions (1/10 and 2/10) are for women who are still having periods or in perimenopause. Continuous versions (Conti) are for women who are at least 12 months past their last period.

Femoston contains estradiol (body-identical oestrogen) and dydrogesterone (a progestogen). In the sequential versions, you take oestrogen-only tablets for 14 days, then combined oestrogen + progestogen tablets for 14 days, producing a monthly withdrawal bleed. In Femoston-conti, every tablet contains both hormones and there should be no monthly bleed.

Femoston sequential: women in perimenopause or early menopause who still have periods. Femoston-conti: women who are at least 12 months past their last period and want bleed-free HRT. Not suitable for women with a history of breast cancer, blood clots, or active liver disease.

Common: breast tenderness, headache, nausea, abdominal pain (usually settle within 3 months). Uncommon: bloating, mood changes, weight changes. Rare: VTE (oral oestrogen carries a small increased clotting risk compared to transdermal). Breakthrough bleeding may occur in the first few months.

Known or suspected breast cancer, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active or recent VTE, untreated endometrial hyperplasia, active liver disease, porphyria. Known allergy to estradiol or dydrogesterone.

CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John's Wort) may reduce effectiveness. Thyroid replacement: may need dose adjustment. Anticoagulants: monitoring may be needed.

Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Femoston is for menopausal women only.

Take one tablet daily at the same time. Sequential versions: follow the colour-coded tablet order on the blister pack. Do not stop abruptly without medical advice. Regular breast screening and cervical screening should continue. Review your HRT with a prescriber at least annually.
