Relief of menopausal symptoms including hot flushes, night sweats, vaginal dryness, mood changes, difficulty sleeping, and reduced libido. Also used for bone protection in women at risk of osteoporosis. Must be combined with a progestogen (e.g. Utrogestan) if you have a womb, to protect the womb lining.

Oestrogel delivers body-identical 17-beta estradiol through the skin (transdermal). This replaces the oestrogen your ovaries no longer produce after menopause. Transdermal oestrogen avoids first-pass liver metabolism, which means it does not increase clotting risk in the way oral oestrogen can. You apply 1-2 pumps daily to your inner arm or thigh.

Women experiencing menopausal symptoms, whether natural or surgical menopause. Particularly suitable for women with risk factors for blood clots, as transdermal oestrogen does not increase VTE risk. Also suitable for women with migraine, raised BMI, or liver conditions where oral oestrogen is less appropriate.

Common: breast tenderness, headache, nausea (usually settles within 3 months). Uncommon: bloating, leg cramps, skin irritation at application site. Transdermal oestrogen does not carry the increased VTE risk associated with oral oestrogen. May cause irregular bleeding initially if starting HRT.

Known or suspected breast cancer, undiagnosed vaginal bleeding, active or recent VTE (unless on anticoagulants and using transdermal), untreated endometrial hyperplasia, active liver disease, porphyria.

CYP3A4 inducers (carbamazepine, phenytoin, rifampicin, St John's Wort) may reduce effectiveness. Thyroid replacement: may need dose adjustment. Transdermal route has fewer drug interactions than oral oestrogen.

Not for use in pregnancy or breastfeeding. Oestrogel is for menopausal women only.

Apply to clean, dry skin on your inner arm or thigh. Allow to dry before dressing. Do not apply to breasts. Avoid contact with others' skin for at least one hour after application. If you have a womb, you MUST take a progestogen alongside Oestrogel to protect your womb lining. Regular breast screening and cervical screening should continue as normal.
