Aciclovir
For Herpes & Shingles
Tackling herpes viruses. The sooner, the better.
In brief…
Aciclovir is the first-line antiviral for herpes simplex virus (cold sores, genital herpes) and varicella-zoster virus (chickenpox, shingles). It’s most effective when started early - within 72 hours of symptom onset for shingles, and at the first tingle for cold sores. Also available as cream for cold sores.

What you need to know
Genital herpes (first episode and recurrent), herpes simplex encephalitis, shingles (herpes zoster), chickenpox (in immunocompromised or severe cases), and cold sores (topical or oral).
Aciclovir is a nucleoside analogue that’s activated by the viral enzyme thymidine kinase (only present in infected cells). Once activated, it inhibits viral DNA polymerase, stopping viral replication. Because it’s only activated in infected cells, it has very low toxicity to normal cells.
Adults and children. Very safe drug. Dose adjustment needed in kidney impairment. Must be taken five times daily for herpes simplex, which is its main disadvantage (valaciclovir is the alternative with simpler dosing). Adequate hydration important.
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door.

Start as early as possible. Herpes simplex: 200mg five times daily for 5 days. Shingles: 800mg five times daily for 7 days. The five-times-daily dosing is inconvenient - set alarms. Drink plenty of water (to prevent crystallisation in kidneys). Very well-tolerated: nausea and headache occasionally. For suppression of recurrent genital herpes: 400mg twice daily long-term. Valaciclovir (Valaciclovir 500mg-1000mg) For Herpes & Shingles Aciclovir made simpler. Fewer tablets, same effect.
