Cefalexin stops bacteria building their cell walls, so they burst and die. It works only on bacteria, not on viruses such as colds and flu.

Side effects vary. Common effects may include nausea, headache, and gastrointestinal disturbances. Please refer to the patient information leaflet supplied with your medication for a complete list. Report any unexpected or severe side effects to your prescriber or pharmacist.

Do not take cefalexin if you are allergic to cephalosporins, or if you have had a severe or immediate reaction (anaphylaxis, swelling, breathing difficulty) to penicillin. Tell us about any kidney problems, as the dose may need changing.

Tell us about all medicines you take. Cefalexin can affect some blood and urine tests, and can interact with metformin and probenecid.

Cefalexin is widely used in pregnancy and breastfeeding when an antibiotic is needed. Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding so the prescriber can confirm it is right for you.

Usual adult dose: 500mg two or three times a day, for the course your prescriber sets (often 5 to 7 days). Take it at evenly spaced times and finish the course even if you feel better. Seek urgent help if you get a rash, swelling of the face or lips, or difficulty breathing. Diarrhoea can occur; if it is severe or bloody, stop and seek advice.
