Acute bacterial conjunctivitis (red eye with sticky discharge).

Chloramphenicol inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit. It’s effective against a broad range of bacteria that cause eye infections. When applied as eye drops, very little is absorbed systemically, making it very safe.

Adults and children (OTC for over 2 years; prescription for under 2). Available as drops (use during the day) and ointment (use at bedtime - blurs vision). Not for viral conjunctivitis (which is more common and self-limiting).

Apply one drop every 2 hours for the first 48 hours, then four times daily for 5 days. Ointment: apply at bedtime (blurs vision). Discard 28 days after opening. Wash hands before and after application. Don’t wear contact lenses during treatment. If symptoms don’t improve within 48 hours, see a doctor - it may be viral (no antibiotic needed) or a more serious eye condition.
