Esomeprazole
For Acid Reflux & Ulcers
The refined PPI. Consistent acid control.
In brief…
Esomeprazole (Nexium) is the S-isomer of omeprazole, designed to provide more consistent acid suppression between individuals. In practice, it’s very similar to omeprazole but may offer marginal benefits in severe reflux oesophagitis. Available as tablets, granules and injection.

What you need to know
GORD (including severe erosive oesophagitis), peptic ulcers, H. pylori eradication, NSAID gastroprotection.
Same proton pump inhibition as omeprazole. As the pure S-isomer, esomeprazole has more predictable metabolism - less variation between fast and slow metabolisers. This may translate to slightly more consistent acid control.
Adults with acid-related conditions, particularly those with severe erosive oesophagitis or who haven’t responded adequately to omeprazole. Available as granules for patients who can’t swallow tablets.
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door.

Common: headache, diarrhoea, nausea, abdominal pain, constipation, flatulence. Uncommon: dizziness, rash, dry mouth. Long-term use: increased risk of bone fractures, hypomagnesaemia, vitamin B12 deficiency, Clostridium difficile infection.
Hypersensitivity to the active substance or benzimidazole derivatives. Use with caution in hepatic impairment.
Clopidogrel: omeprazole/esomeprazole reduce its effectiveness - use lansoprazole or pantoprazole instead. Reduces absorption of drugs requiring gastric acid (ketoconazole, itraconazole, atazanavir). Methotrexate: may increase levels.
Omeprazole and lansoprazole: extensive use in pregnancy with no evidence of harm, though use only if necessary. Compatible with breastfeeding.
Take 30 minutes before food. Same long-term considerations and side effects as other PPIs. Granule sachets can be mixed with water for patients with swallowing difficulties. Interacts with clopidogrel - tell your doctor if you take blood thinners.
