Finasteride blocks the enzyme that turns testosterone into dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone that drives prostate growth. Over 6 months the prostate shrinks.

No important interactions are known. It is often used together with tamsulosin.

Take one 5mg tablet once a day. Improvement can take up to 6 months. Finasteride halves your PSA blood level, so tell any doctor checking your prostate that you take it. Report any breast lumps, pain or nipple discharge. Women who are or may become pregnant must not handle crushed or broken tablets.
