Common: morning drowsiness and dry mouth. Less common: blurred vision, constipation and dizziness. These anticholinergic effects matter more in older adults. Report anything unexpected to your prescriber or pharmacist.

Do not use with untreated narrow-angle glaucoma, significant urinary retention, or alongside a monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Tell your prescriber about heart, eye, prostate, liver and kidney conditions.

Adds to the effect of alcohol and other sedatives. Interacts with some antidepressants and medicines that affect heart rhythm. List everything you take, including over the counter and herbal products.

Tell your prescriber if you are pregnant, planning pregnancy or breastfeeding, so the risks and benefits can be weighed for you.

Take in the evening before bed. The dose for sleep is low, usually 25mg or less; a 25mg in 5ml liquid is available if a smaller dose suits you. Higher doses belong to the treatment of depression, not sleep, so follow the dose you are given. Avoid alcohol. Do not stop abruptly after long use without advice.
