Alendronic Acid
For Osteoporosis
Stronger bones. Fewer fractures. One tablet a week.
In brief…
Alendronic acid is the most commonly prescribed osteoporosis treatment in the UK. One tablet weekly strengthens your bones by slowing down the cells that break bone down. It significantly reduces the risk of hip, spine and wrist fractures. The trick is taking it correctly. Calcium and vitamin D supplements are the foundation of osteoporosis prevention and treatment. They ensure your body has the raw materials it needs to build and maintain strong bones. Usually prescribed alongside a bisphosphonate like alendronic acid, or on their own for people at risk of deficiency.

What you need to know
Treatment and prevention of osteoporosis, particularly in post-menopausal women and people on long-term corticosteroids. Prevention and treatment of calcium and vitamin D deficiency, osteoporosis prevention (alongside bisphosphonates), and supplementation during long-term corticosteroid treatment.
Alendronic acid is a bisphosphonate. It binds to bone and inhibits osteoclasts -- the cells that break down bone tissue. With less bone being broken down, the balance tips towards bone formation, and your bones gradually get stronger. Calcium is the mineral that makes bones hard and strong. Vitamin D helps your body absorb calcium from food and supplements. Without enough vitamin D, you can only absorb about 10--15% of dietary calcium. Together, they give your bones what they need.
Adults with osteoporosis or at high risk of fractures. Not suitable if you have oesophageal problems, low calcium levels, or can't remain upright for 30 minutes after taking it. Kidney function needs to be adequate. Adults at risk of calcium or vitamin D deficiency, those with osteoporosis or osteopenia, people on long-term steroids, and older adults with limited sun exposure.
