Long-term prevention of gout attacks by lowering blood uric acid levels. Also used for uric acid kidney stones and tumour lysis syndrome.

Allopurinol blocks xanthine oxidase, the enzyme that converts purines into uric acid. Less uric acid is produced, blood levels fall, and over months the crystals in your joints slowly dissolve. Once they're gone, no more attacks.

Adults with recurrent gout, tophi (uric acid deposits), uric acid kidney stones, or very high uric acid levels. Should not be started during an acute gout attack. Your doctor may recommend genetic testing (HLA-B*5801) before starting, especially in certain ethnic groups.

Start at 100mg daily and increase slowly. Attacks may get worse in the first few months (your doctor will prescribe cover for this with colchicine or an NSAID). Regular blood tests to check uric acid levels and kidney function. Stop immediately and seek medical advice if you develop a rash -- rare but serious allergic reactions can occur.
