At low doses, amitriptyline blocks the reuptake of noradrenaline and serotonin in the spinal cord, which dampens pain signalling. It also blocks sodium channels in nerves, reducing their ability to fire excessive pain signals. The sedating effect is a bonus for people whose pain disrupts sleep.

Adults with neuropathic pain, chronic headaches, or fibromyalgia. Not suitable if you have recent heart attack, heart block, mania, or severe liver disease. Use cautiously in the elderly.
