Baclofen activates GABA-B receptors in the spinal cord, inhibiting the nerve signals that cause muscles to spasm and tighten. It reduces muscle tone and the frequency of painful spasms without completely paralysing the muscles.

Adults with spasticity from neurological conditions or chronic painful muscle spasm. Not suitable if you have active peptic ulceration. Use with caution in epilepsy, kidney impairment, respiratory disease, and the elderly.

Start at a low dose (5mg three times daily) and increase gradually. Common side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, nausea and muscle weakness. Don't stop suddenly after long-term use -- can cause hallucinations and seizures. Avoid alcohol.
