In brief…
Colchicine is one of the oldest medications still in use -- derived from the autumn crocus plant. It's highly effective at treating acute gout attacks and preventing flares when starting uric acid-lowering treatment. Low doses work well; higher doses cause side effects.

What you need to know
Acute gout attacks and prevention of gout flares during initiation of uric acid-lowering therapy (like allopurinol).
Colchicine disrupts the inflammatory response to uric acid crystals. It inhibits neutrophil migration and the release of inflammatory mediators, effectively calming the intense inflammation that causes gout pain. It does not lower uric acid itself.
Adults with acute gout, or as prophylaxis during initiation of allopurinol or febuxostat. Not suitable in severe kidney or liver disease. Dose reduction needed in moderate kidney impairment.
Order online and we review your request. A prescriber checks your consultation form for clinical appropriateness and contacts you if anything else is needed. Once approved, your medication is dispensed and delivered to your door.
