Period pain (dysmenorrhoea), heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), mild to moderate pain, and headache.

Like other NSAIDs, mefenamic acid blocks prostaglandin production. Prostaglandins are responsible for the cramping and heavy bleeding during periods, so reducing them addresses both problems at once.

Women and girls experiencing period pain or heavy periods. Also used for general pain relief in adults. Same contraindications as other NSAIDs. Not recommended for use beyond 7 days at a time.

Common: gastrointestinal disturbances (dyspepsia, nausea, diarrhoea), headache. Uncommon: dizziness, oedema, raised blood pressure. Serious: GI bleeding/ulceration (risk increases with age, dose, and duration), cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) with long-term use, renal impairment.

Do not use if you have active GI bleeding or peptic ulceration, severe heart failure, severe renal or hepatic impairment, history of GI bleeding with previous NSAID use. Avoid in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Celecoxib: avoid in sulfonamide allergy.

Anticoagulants (warfarin, DOACs): increased bleeding risk. ACE inhibitors/ARBs: reduced blood pressure effect and increased renal risk. Lithium: increased levels. SSRIs: increased GI bleeding risk. Other NSAIDs: do not take more than one NSAID at a time.

Avoid in the 3rd trimester (risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and delayed labour). Use in 1st and 2nd trimester only if clearly needed and at lowest dose for shortest duration. Present in breast milk in small amounts - short courses of ibuprofen are generally considered compatible.

Take with food, three times daily during your period. Usually taken for a few days each cycle. Not for long-term continuous use. Same stomach and kidney precautions as other NSAIDs.
