Arthritis (osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis), musculoskeletal pain, gout, period pain, and general pain and inflammation.

Like ibuprofen, naproxen blocks COX enzymes and reduces prostaglandin production. Its longer half-life means each dose provides more sustained relief, making it particularly useful for chronic conditions.

Adults with inflammatory pain conditions. Preferred over ibuprofen for some patients because of its longer duration. Same contraindications as other NSAIDs -- avoid with active stomach ulcers, severe kidney or liver disease, or NSAID allergy.

Common: gastrointestinal disturbances (dyspepsia, nausea, diarrhoea), headache. Uncommon: dizziness, oedema, raised blood pressure. Serious: GI bleeding/ulceration (risk increases with age, dose, and duration), cardiovascular events (heart attack, stroke) with long-term use, renal impairment.

Do not use if you have active GI bleeding or peptic ulceration, severe heart failure, severe renal or hepatic impairment, history of GI bleeding with previous NSAID use. Avoid in the 3rd trimester of pregnancy. Celecoxib: avoid in sulfonamide allergy.

Anticoagulants (warfarin, DOACs): increased bleeding risk. ACE inhibitors/ARBs: reduced blood pressure effect and increased renal risk. Lithium: increased levels. SSRIs: increased GI bleeding risk. Other NSAIDs: do not take more than one NSAID at a time.

Avoid in the 3rd trimester (risk of premature closure of the ductus arteriosus and delayed labour). Use in 1st and 2nd trimester only if clearly needed and at lowest dose for shortest duration. Present in breast milk in small amounts - short courses of ibuprofen are generally considered compatible.

Take with food. Usually prescribed with a proton pump inhibitor (like omeprazole) to protect the stomach, especially for longer-term use. Same cardiovascular and kidney risks as other NSAIDs. Twice-daily dosing is typical.
