Allergic rhinitis, chronic urticaria, and other allergic conditions.

Like cetirizine, loratadine blocks H1 histamine receptors. It has very low penetration into the central nervous system, making it one of the least sedating antihistamines available. It’s converted to an active metabolite (desloratadine) in the liver.

Adults and children over 2 (syrup available). Particularly suitable when sedation must be absolutely avoided. Use with caution in severe liver disease (slower metabolism).

Generally well tolerated. Uncommon: headache, drowsiness (less common with newer antihistamines), dry mouth, fatigue.

Hypersensitivity. Use with caution in epilepsy, prostatic hypertrophy, urinary retention, narrow-angle glaucoma (sedating antihistamines).

Minimal interactions with non-sedating antihistamines. Avoid grapefruit juice with fexofenadine.

Non-sedating antihistamines (cetirizine, loratadine): limited data but widely used without evidence of harm. Generally preferred over sedating antihistamines in pregnancy. Compatible with breastfeeding in short courses.

Take once daily on an empty stomach for fastest absorption. Truly non-drowsy for the vast majority of people. Safe for long-term use. If loratadine isn’t strong enough, your doctor may suggest switching to a different antihistamine or adding other treatments.
