Hay fever and allergic reactions such as hives, travel sickness, and occasional short-term difficulty sleeping.

Promethazine blocks histamine, which eases itch and allergy symptoms. It also acts on the brain's balance and sleep centres, which is why it helps with travel sickness and causes drowsiness.

Adults. Not suitable if you have severe liver disease or are taking an MAOI antidepressant. Use with care if you have epilepsy, glaucoma, prostate problems or breathing problems.

Do not take if you have taken an MAOI antidepressant in the last 14 days, have severe liver disease, or are in a coma. Take care with epilepsy, glaucoma, an enlarged prostate, or asthma and other breathing problems.

Increased drowsiness with alcohol, opioids, sleeping tablets, some antidepressants and other sedating medicines. Tell us every medicine you take.

Tell us if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. It is sometimes used in pregnancy for sickness on a doctor's advice, but it can make a breastfed baby drowsy.

Allergy: 25mg at night, or 10mg to 20mg two or three times a day. Travel sickness: 25mg the night before the journey. Sleeplessness: 25mg at bedtime for short-term use only. Do not drink alcohol. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel drowsy, including the next morning. Not for long-term use for sleep.
