Do I need a doctor to order a scan?

Yes, imaging needs a referring clinician by law. We handle that with a safety questionnaire and a doctor authorisation, so you do not need an appointment.

Where is the scan done?

At one of our imaging partners, chosen with you by location and availability. Not at Westfield.

Do I have to come to Westfield?

No. The scan is at the partner, and the doctor authorises and reports it remotely.

What if the scan finds something?

We explain it and arrange the next step fast, NHS two-week-wait or private, your choice.

Is whole-body MRI worth it?

Sometimes. It finds incidental things in around a third of people, so it suits some situations and not others. The doctor will tell you plainly whether it answers your question.

Can I share my result with my NHS GP?

Yes. The report is yours. Forward the email or hand a printed copy to your NHS GP.

How it works

Choose your scan. From the list below, or the one your doctor recommended.
Answer a few questions. A safety questionnaire, so the doctor can authorise the referral.
Get scanned at a partner. Near you or near Westfield, usually within days.
Get your result. A doctor explains it in a written report. The report is yours.

The scans

Bone and body

DEXA bone density. Osteoporosis risk, useful after the menopause, on long-term steroids, or with a fracture history.

DEXA body composition. Fat mass, lean mass and visceral fat, a precise baseline to track.

Heart

CT coronary calcium score. A direct look at calcified plaque, useful where cardiovascular risk is borderline.

CT coronary angiography (CTCA). A fuller look at the coronary arteries, where the calcium score or symptoms warrant it.

Cancer and organs

Prostate mpMRI. The modern look at the prostate for a raised PSA. See the Prostate Check.

Mammogram and breast MRI. By age, breast density and family history.

Low-dose CT lung. For current and ex-smokers in the at-risk band.

What a scan can and cannot tell you

A few things worth saying.

A scan is not a diagnosis on its own. It is one piece, read in context by a doctor.
Whole-body MRI finds incidental things in around a third of people, most of which turn out to be nothing, and the workup for nothing is what causes worry and cost. We talk you through whether it is right for you first.
We will tell you if a scan is not the right test for your question, and point you at the one that is.
